Sitting in a circular fashion with your fellow writers in a classroom can feel daunting. The prospect of your peers having read your initial work and potentially affecting your grade, motivation, or love for writing can be nerve-wracking.

However, taking a creative writing class can be a great way to improve your writing skills and advance your writing career. Completing my BA was one of my most rewarding accomplishments. Out of all of my classes, I can say I learned the most from my senior year capstone professor about what it took to be a writer, and I wish I had followed her advice sooner.

You might not catch yourself using the same words repeatedly,
• Boost your creativity: By taking a creative writing class, you can tap into your creativity and explore new ideas and concepts that you may not have considered before.
  I probably wouldn’t have discovered my niche as a mystery and fiction writer had I not given myself a shot. I introduced the framework of a WIP and got some helpful insights that shaped the way the plot has flourished over the years.
• Learn from experts: Attending a creative writing class allows you to learn from experts in the field, who can provide valuable insights and feedback on your work.
  Most of my college English professors have done the freelance writing gig. You’re learning from the best – so ask questions about publishing, ask about resources, and anything else that comes to mind.
• Connect with other writers in creative writing classes to exchange ideas, get inspiration, and receive support in a welcoming environment.
  I am still in contact with many of my classmates and occasionally consult them when I am struggling. These classmates are your peers and networking is important.
• Develop your writing style: Through writing exercises and assignments, you can develop your personal and unique writing style and voice.
• Constructive criticism is a valuable skill. Creative writing classes offer a chance to enhance writing and communication by giving and receiving helpful feedback.

I crafted one of the most unforgettable prompts for a creative writing class: “Write about something you can’t forget.” I dedicated a significant amount of time and effort to writing my story, and as a result, the end product exceeded both my professor’s and my own expectations. Despite facing several challenges throughout the process, I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent outcome.
